An FBX normal map renders at the strength written in the file, and a file that names no strength renders the map as authored. On the demo vase the engraved band stands in relief and the turning marks are visible along the body.
Setup states which version Explorer uses. Where the Microsoft Store version is installed, Explorer keeps it for thumbnails and the preview pane, and Setup says so. The Directory Opus plugin and the viewer install either way.

The viewer opens a demo scene when it is started with no file. From the Start menu it shows a brass vase, by Rico Cilliers and Poly Haven, on its floor and under its environment, with every setting at its shipped default. The window title and a note in the corner say it is the demo. The demo stays out of your recent files and leaves your settings as they are.
The viewer opens a file from inside its own window. A folder button, first on the toolbar, opens the standard file chooser for every format the viewer reads. A file dropped anywhere on the window opens too. Both are in the standalone viewer. In Directory Opus and the Explorer preview pane the host chooses the file.

The Explorer preview pane exports. Saving an image, copying a frame, saving a sprite sheet and recording a turntable all work in that pane, and Buy a licence opens the browser from it. A helper process writes the file and opens the page on the pane's behalf. The pane hands it finished bytes or the purchase address, and nothing else crosses between them.
Exports save to Documents\Heimdall3D. The folder is created the first time it is needed. The Configure card names it, marks it as the default and takes another choice. A save that cannot complete names the folder it tried.
The recording menu names the format it writes. Recording a clip has a menu entry of its own.
The licence key mail gives the steps for entering the key in Windows Explorer and in Directory Opus.
While you drag a window edge, the frame already drawn scales to fit, and a fresh render starts 150 ms after the size settles. A setup can be removed from the Explorer preview pane. An update installs while the viewer's helper is running, and the installer asks before it replaces a file.
